Since I have been writing Cop's Corner, several people have written with questions regarding the "move over law." The move over law was enacted on July 1, 2007, and requires motorist to exercise caution when approaching an area on the freeway where emergency vehicles are present and displaying emergency lights. This law also applies to tow trucks and other stationary vehicles, which are parked along freeways with their emergency lights activated.

Virginia HOV Violators Beware
Virginia and Maryland authorities aim to crackdown on High Occupancy Vehicle lane violators today. Police from both states will come together for Capitol Region HOV Awareness Day this morning, fanning out in search of those cheating the express lanes. Officers will also look to make sure drivers are obeying Virginia’s “Move Over” law, which requires drivers to change lanes before they pass an emergency vehicle stopped on the side of the roadway with lights on. Violating the law can result in a $2,500 fine.
