WISCONSIN DRIVING CONDITIONS STILL HAZARDOUS STATEWIDE
Driving conditions are expected to remain hazardous throughout the state Sunday with blowing snow and ice on many roadways. Temperatures will also be dangerously low, and combined with high winds, can cause frostbite within minutes, as well as hypothermia. Motorists are urged to stay off the roads unless travel is necessary. Current reports show most roads in the state snow covered and slippery. Those who need to travel should slow down and be alert for rapidly changing conditions. Blowing snow can create whiteouts and icy road conditions. Because of the very cold temperatures road salt will not be effective on icy roads. The State Patrol reports responding to nearly 150 crashes and more than 200 run-offs statewide between Noon on Saturday and 3:00 am on Sunday, with no fatalities reported. For the safety of law enforcement officers, as well as emergency responders and others working on the highways, Wisconsin has a "Move Over Law." The law requires drivers to move over or slow down to provide a safety zone for stopped emergency vehicles. For winter road conditions, check the Wisconsin Department of Transportation's Web site at the link provided or call 1-800-ROADWIS (762-762-3947).
