(PA)(04-11-2022) Road Service Technician struck & killed on Interstate 81

A Road Service Technician was struck & killed on Interstate 81 in Susquehanna Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania on Monday, April 11th.

The man who died after being struck while responding to a roadside service call on Interstate 81 has been identified as Jeffrey Hanwell, 49, of Goldsboro, York County.

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation officials said Hanwell was trying to assist a broken-down box truck when a passing motorist ran into the disabled truck, propelling it into Hanwell. PennDOT spokeswoman Fritzi Schreffler said the box truck was sitting on the shoulder of I-81 south, near the Front Street interchange, when the crash took place at about 9 a.m.

Police said their investigation showed an approaching truck drifted across the right lanes onto the right shoulder, and the right side of his truck’s front bumper slammed into the left rear of the disabled truck.

Hanwell, who was near the passenger side door of the box truck at the time, was struck as the box truck was pushed into him. Hanwell was airlifted from the scene to Holy Spirit Hospital but could not be saved.
