Arizona: Deputies warning drivers to move over or face big fine
About 1.2 million Arizona residents will head home from a Labor Day weekend road trip on Monday. But holiday weekend or not, there’s something all drivers should be on the lookout for while on the road.
Shocking numbers from AAA reveal about half of drivers report almost being hit on roads in Arizona. Tucson News Nowwill spend Labor Day morning on Interstate 10 with a trooper from the Arizona Department of Public Safety to see just how many drivers aren’t obeying the law.
State law says if you see a vehicle pulled over to the side of the road, you need to move over to another lane, or at least slow down if you can’t. But a lot of drivers aren’t doing that, making it very dangerous for stranded drivers, tow truck drivers and law enforcement/emergency vehicles.
Newly released video of close calls shows just how dangerous the side of the road can be. It’s estimated that one tow truck driver is killed every six days, and 23 highway workers and one law enforcement officer are killed every month.
The move over law applies to all public roads and state highways. Not moving over could cost someone’s life, or a fine of up to $650.
