Arizona: ADOT urges caution after 2 workers killed on Arizona freeways
The Arizona Department of Transportation is warning drivers to stay alert following the deaths this month of two men who were struck and killed while working on state highways. Hours after the latest casualty Monday, ADOT began posting this message on freeway overhead signs: “2 road workers killed this month; drive alert.”
"These unnecessary and avoidable tragedies illustrate the need for drivers to pay attention in work zones and to give a safe margin of space to vehicles with flashing lights, such as tow trucks and emergency responders," according to an ADOT statement. Early Monday, 22-year-old Jarvis Crenshaw was moving barricades off southbound Loop 101 and onto the shoulder near milepost 42.5 in Scottsdale when he was struck by a passenger vehicle, said Trooper Quentin Mehr, an Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman.
Crenshaw was taken to HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center, where he died, Mehr said. The driver, a 22-year-old Scottsdale man, stayed at the scene. The accident investigation was ongoing Tuesday, and it wasn't clear if any enforcement action would be taken, Mehr said.
Also Tuesday, the driver of a white-box truck that struck and killed tow-truck driver Danny Haro, 58, had yet to be located. Haro was helping a motorist near Benson at about 2:30 a.m. June 3 when he was killed.
A number of police, fire and tow-truck drivers attended Haro’s funeral to raise awareness for Arizona’s “Move Over” law. The law is intended to help curb accidents like the one that killed Haro by requiring drivers to keep a lane between themselves and any parked vehicles they pass on the side of the highway.
