Illinois: Illinois State Police remind holiday travelers of Move Over Law
Many people are traveling this holiday season, and the Illinois State Police are reminding motorists to hit the brakes and move over for stopped government vehicles.
Scott's Law, better known as the Move Over Law, requires drivers to move over or slow down when an authorized vehicle is on the side of the road with its lights on. The law not only includes police, fire and emergency vehicles, but also maintenance, construction and tow trucks.
"We just need to be mindful that it's not just a car and it's not just a man or woman in uniform, it's someone's loved one that most of the time has to be there, doing that job," Illinois State Police Lt. Carl Heintz said.
ISP officials say those that violate the law could face expensive fines of between $100 and $10,000.
