Oklahoma: New 'Move Over' law protects highway construction workers from passing motorists
A new law now requires drivers to change lanes for maintenance workers on state highways. Gov. Mary Fallon signed House Bill 1113 earlier this week. The legislation is aimed at protecting Department of Transportation and Oklahoma Turnpike Authority vehicles from passing motorists.
Three ODOT workers in District 8 have been killed on the job in the last decade and OTA says 50 employees have been injured in the past three years. Prior legislation only applied to law enforcement and emergency personnel. Now, if drivers don't switch lanes or slow down if it's not safe to move over they can be fined up to $500 or sentenced to 10 days in jail.
