Arkansas: Police Remind Drivers to 'Move Over'
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is trying to raise awareness of Move Over laws. In Arkansas, state law requires drivers approaching emergency vehicles displaying flashing lights to move to the farthest lane from that vehicle, if the driver is traveling in the same direction. The Move Over law also applies for tow trucks as well, but these laws vary depending on what state you are in.
Police officers in Joplin, Missouri, say a lot of people do not move over. "If I have someone pulled over, then it's usually about 50% that will merge over into the other lane. Sometimes it's more, sometimes it's less... That's what causes people to get hurt, especially officers," said Officer David McGough with the Joplin Police Department. All 50 states have Move Over laws in place to protect law enforcement officials and first responders stopped on our roads. But according to the NHTSA, almost 30% of the country does not know about those laws.
