• New York 'Move Over' Law to Expand and Include Amber Lights

  New York State Police are reminding people about changes coming to the Move Over Law. Starting Jan. 1, drivers will have to move into a passing lane not only for police cars pulled over on the side of the road, but for tow trucks, maintenance vehicles, or anything else with an amber flashing light.

  The “move over” law designed to protect police and other first responders when making stops on roadways has been expanded to include additional vehicles such as tow trucks and snow plows, Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard said Friday.

• South Dakota Law Enforcement Urges Motorists to "Slow Down and Move Over"

  The South Dakota Highway Patrol, State Office of Highway Safety and local law enforcement agencies began a joint campaign Wednesday, December 21st to ask motorists to "slow down and move over'' when they approach flashing yellow lights that indicate a crash scene or emergency vehicle on the highway.

• New York Move Over Law Expands to Tow Trucks

  It's a move that will keep even more people safe on the road. Starting on January 1, the "Move Over" law in New York will expand to include tow trucks. The current law fines drivers in New York, if they don't move into another lane for police and ambulance vehicles on the road.

• New Jersey Drivers Must Move Over When Passing Stopped Police Cars

  The South Brunswick Police Department finished a weeklong awareness campaign for the Move Over Law with a police decoy on Dec. 8. The decoy consisted of a simulated disabled vehicle on the shoulder of Route 522 with a tow truck in front of it and a police vehicle behind it. In accordance with the 2009 law, motorists driving on the road were required to move over one lane or, if it was not safe to move over, slow down below the posted speed limit.

  A change in New York State's Move Over Law goes into effect next year. This time the law will cover tow trucks and roadside service vehicles.
