MINNESOTA MOVE-OVER MOVEMENT

Workers Memorial Day April 28. A day set aside to honor (with a moment of silence) those workers who have lost their life while on the job. Road construction and highway maintenance activity will soon be in full swing, along with many “work zones.” Work zones quite often can be identified by orange signs, cones, barrels, flaggers, flashing/rotating strobe lights, or where workers are present.

As a transportation employee, I would like to encourage motorists to help make the 2008 road work season accident, injury and fatality free by devoting your full attention to getting through the work zone safely, for your sake as well as ours. That may mean slowing down, discontinuing cell phone activity, reading, eating or any other activity that prevents you from giving 100 percent of your attention to your driving.

The life you save might just be your own. Yes, even motorists have lost their life or been injured in a highway work zone. Let’s all try our best to bring ourselves home safely to our loved ones this road work and highway maintenance season. And please remember the “Trooper Foss, move over law” as you drive our highways.

Thank you, and have a safe and happy summer.
