MAKE WAY FOR VIRGINIA EMERGENCY VEHICLES OR PAY
Failure to switch lanes or slow down when you see an emergency vehicle on the side of the road soon could land you in jail for up to one year. Current law requires drivers to move over if the police or other emergency vehicle is occupying part of a lane, but the so-called move-over law that passed unanimously out of the House Saturday would expand that to those on the side of a highway.
The Senate unanimously passed the bill on Thursday. In addition to jail time, those who break the law could face a $2,500 fine. Failing to comply would result in the loss of a driver's license for up to one year if property is damaged, up to two years if someone is injured or for two years if someone is killed. The law would go into effect as soon as the governor signs it.
