FLORIDA AUTHORITIES ENFORCING MOVE OVER LAW

Authorities are cracking down today, as they enforce the Move Over law.

Authorities are out and ready to give tickets to drivers who do not obey the new law. "Today's enforcement will involve speeding citations and move-over citations," said Mike Jachles of the Broward Sheriff's Office. "We want to educate drivers. We want to get the word out, and we will enforce people who do not yield, not just for law enforcement, but for any emergency workers on the road."

A new public service announcement details what the Move Over law is all about: "If you see flashing lights or hear sirens coming from behind you, move over and allow the emergency vehicle to pass. When approaching an emergency vehicle, stop along the roadway, vacate the lane closest to the emergency vehicle."

Friday's traffic stop is happening on the Sawgrass Expressway, the same area where a Florida Highway Patrol trooper died in 1995 after a driver failed to move over. Officials say if you do not obey these laws, you will get a ticket, a moving violation worth $122. If you're on a two-lane road, police say you must slow down to 20 mph below the speed limit.
