FLORIDA TROOPERS WARN DRIVERS:
The Florida Highway Patrol is cracking down on drivers who ignore the "Move Over" law in Operation Mole. The rule of the law is simple, according to troopers. "If we are stopped on the right shoulder, you are required to move to the left lane," said Trooper Jennifer Drake.
She says she has seen fellow troopers get hit by cars during traffic stops.
"I've been to funerals where police officers have been hit and killed," said Drake. In 2006, FHP says more than 250 officers statewide were hit by cars during traffic stops.
"An officer has a better chance of surviving getting shot than getting hit by a car," said Trooper Edward Pope. And this law protects more than just police.
"It's any law enforcement vehicle, service vehicle, tow truck, construction vehicle," said Pope. If you are on a multi-lane road, like I-75, you are required to move at least one lane away from any emergency vehicle. However, if a driver can't change lanes because of traffic or you are on a two lane road, you are supposed to slow down to 20 mph below the speed limit.
It's a law many drivers either don't know or just ignore. Troopers are now educating them with tickets. The price for violating the law ranges from $85 to $95.
