WISCONSIN STATE PATROL URGES DRIVERS TO PAY ATTENTION
Wisconsin's "Move Over Law" has been in effect for six years. Law enforcement says too many drivers fail to follow it. The law requires drivers to move over or slow down when a law enforcement officer has someone else pulled over. "When they come really close is when you realize, this isn't a good spot for me to be standing," says Sgt. Steve Tape with the Wisconsin State Patrol.
Sgt. Tape used video from the State Patrol to show how vulnerable troopers are during a traffic stop. To watch that video, just click on the camera icon that's attached to this story. "You have to be looking a little further ahead and see those lights and then start to slow down... make those decisions on where to move or what your plan of action should be as you're approaching," says Sgt. Tape.
The law doesn't just include law enforcement. If you see a tow truck, stalled vehicle, or maintenance vehicle on the side of the road, you should still move over or slow down. The State Patrol says if you're pulled over for a traffic stop, pull as far off the shoulder as you can. The ticket for breaking the Move Over Law will cost someone $249.
