GEORGIA DRIVERS STILL NOT ABIDING BY MOVE OVER LAW
The state's Move Over law has been on the books since 2003, but many motorists still don't get it. Currently, 38 states have Move Over laws, designed to protect emergency workers who pull off the roadway to take care of emergencies. Georgia's law requires drivers to move over one lane when they see workers alongside the road. Failure to do can result in a fine up to $500.
Larry Schnall with the Georgia State Patrol said the law was enacted to protect police officers as well as DOT crews who are working on the roadside. He said that a number of officers have suffered crippling injuries, and others have died, after being hit by passing vehicles.
Schnall did not know the number of tickets written statewide for violating the Move Over Law since it was enacted. He said there is no easily accessible database containing that information because that charged is not specifically "defined" on the ticket form troopers currently use.
