DOZENS OF DRIVERS BUSTED DURING FLORIDA OPERATION MOVER-OVER-LAW ENFORCEMENT
The Florida Highway Patrol conducted a special sting on Friday September 21 and went after drivers who didn't obey the "Move Over Law." Florida law requires drivers to change lanes and move over when they pass a law enforcement officer conducting a traffic stop. It was passed to protect officers.
"Most officers killed or injured in the line of duty are the results of a traffic stop," said Trooper Edward Pope of the Florida Highway Patrol.
Trooper Pope says many drivers violate the law every day, so on Friday they stepped up enforcement by conducting Operation M.O.L.E., which stands for Move Over for Law Enforcement.
One trooper would pull someone over. If other drivers didn't move over, they too got pulled over. So why did drivers do it? Most offered the same excuse.
"I did not know the rule," said one driver. Another added, "It just didn't occur to me."
Troopers hope the ticket will remind them to move over next time.
The citation will cost drivers $85 and three points on their license.
Troopers say Operation M.O.L.E. will also take place on Saturday.
