MICHIGAN POLICE CRACKING DOWN ON MOVER-OVER LAW VIOLATIONS
Drive too close to a police officer or emergency vehicle and get hit with a heavy fine. Some Ingham County drivers learned that expensive lesson. Law enforcement are cracking down on people violating Michigan's "move over law." Sergeant Jeff Weiss has spent the past 12 years working traffic safety for the Ingham County Sheriff's Department. He says the job comes with many dangers. One of the biggest is when drivers get too close during a traffic stop.
Sgt. Jeffrey Weiss, Ingham County Sheriff's Dept.: "Many times you are on a traffic stop and someone comes up and doesn't move over. You have inches. The car goes by you inches away."
Michael Soltis, Ingham County Sheriff's Dept.: "That's how EMS workers, emergency responders, tow truck drivers, that's how they get killed."
Police say, when you pass an emergency vehicle, you're supposed to pull over in the far lane left lane. If you cant get over, they say you should at least slow down. They're cracking down on people who are breaking that law. Ingham County deputies teamed up on I-96 near the Williamston exit. While one deputy was busy writing speeding tickets, another was catching drivers for getting too close.
Sgt. Jeffrey Weiss: "On a typical traffic stop we may five or six people not move over, and you cant get everybody."
But those they did catch face a stiff penalty, a misdemeanor citation and a $500 fine.
Sgt. Jeffrey Weiss: "It's very frustrating, that's why we enforce it so aggressively."
Weiss says they're determined to keep the roads safe for themselves, as well as everyone else. The Ingham County Sheriff's Department says it will conduct these operations sporadically throughout the summer.
