FATAL INDIANA CRASH INSPIRES MOVEOVER LAW

The move over law that went into effect on July 1st, 1999 was inspired in part by a horrible crash here in South Bend earlier that year. Three people were killed in this crash on the Toll Road, just west of Bendix.

A State Police Trooper pulled over an Expedition. Then, a semi went off the road, slamming into the police cruiser and then the Expedition.

Rookie Trooper Richard Gaston was killed, as well as 11 year old Charlie Fewell and Charlie's grandfather, 66 year old Duane Fites. The truck driver was Cornelius Spencer.

The driver pled guilty to causing the crash and was sentenced to 14 years in prison. Drug tests revealed he had cocaine in his system during the crash.
