MOVE OVER...OR FACE A FINE AND JAIL TIME

The Michigan Move Over Law took effect statewide in 2001. It requires drivers to move over into another lane or slow down for emergency vehicles flashing their lights on the side of the road. Violating the law is a misdemeanor, injuring an emergency worker can lead to prison time or more than $7,000 in fines.

The law was recently updated to include road service vehicles like wreckers. But the owner of a towing company in Gaylord says drivers either don't know the law or don't always want to obey it. He says that makes his job dangerous, even life-threatening.
