INDIANA STATE POLICE TO CONDUCT MOVE-OVER PATROLS
A move-over patrol will be held in the Pendleton District. The patrol will be directed toward motorists who fail to move over or reduce speed for stopped emergency vehicles. In the history of the Indiana State Police there have been seven Indiana State Troopers and one Motor Carrier enforcement officer struck and killed while working alongside Indiana roadways.
The move over law requires motorists to approach cautiously when an emergency vehicle is stopped on two or four lane roadways with emergency lights flashing. Motorists must change lanes away from the emergency vehicle if they can do so safely. Motorists who are unable to change lanes due to heavy traffic must slow down.
Indiana Emergency Vehicles include police vehicles, ambulances, fire and rescue, highway incident-response vehicles, highway work vehicles, vehicle recovery trucks (tow trucks). The move over patrols will be held in Madison, Hamilton, and Hancock counties. A new bill board is posted around Indiana depicting the mangled Indiana State Police car of Sergeant Richard Kelly, Lafayette Post, who miraculously survived after his police car was struck when he had a motorist pulled over.
