POLICE PULL OVER SPEEDERS ALONG I-235

Traffic officers are planning to enforce safe driving along Interstate 235. They also said that drivers need to move over and slow down when cars are parked in the shoulder.

Des Moines police Officer Scott Fisher pulled over speeders along I-235. Drivers continued to speed by and failed to switch lanes as he wrote out citations.

On Monday morning, six Des Moines police officers and two Iowa State Patrol officers set up extra enforcement along Interstate 235 and Euclid Avenue in the westbound lane. They said there are a lot of speeders at this spot as drivers enter the city from Interstate 80 or Interstate 35.

They said it's important that drivers obey the law that requires them to move over when driving past a parked car with flashing lights in the shoulder.

The other part of the law deals with speed. If an officer is on the shoulder, drivers are supposed to slow down to at least 10 mph below the speed limit.

"We're out here trying to enforce the speed laws. It's just very dangerous for us to be out here with people going by us 65 to 70 mph," Fisher said.

Officers wrote 68 speeding tickets, and three of those were citations for failing to move away from lanes when a car is parked in the shoulder. They started this enforcement last week, and officers will continue it once or twice a week through the summer.

The penalty for violating the Move Over Law is a $116 ticket.
