MANY DRIVERS NOT MOVED BY THE FLORIDA

As many as 85 percent of area motorists ignore a state law set up to keep troopers, police officers and other emergency workers safer. Those who continue to disobey the law could end up paying a hefty fine toward the end of the week.

The Florida Highway Patrol has set up a two-day campaign to crack down on violators of the Move Over Act, which requires motorists to move over a lane or at least slow down when passing emergency vehicles stopped on the side of the highway.

The campaign will run Friday January 26 and Saturday January 27 in Sarasota and Charlotte counties. Officials with the FHP's Venice District hope it will become a routine operation statewide to enforce the law.
