NEW ALABAMA 'MOVE-OVER LAW': OBEY IT OR RISK A TICKET
Some people act surprised when pulled over by law enforcement officers and issued a ticket for violating the state's relatively new "move-over law," Alabama State Troopers said. The law has been in effect since July 1. It requires motorists to change into a lane not adjacent to a police patrol vehicle, ambulance, fire truck or other emergency vehicle that is stopped and flashing its emergency lights. If changing lanes is unsafe -- for example, when the road has only two lanes and a vehicle is approaching from the opposite direction -- motorists should slow to at least 10 mph under the speed limit. Since the law took effect, troopers have issued 221 tickets to motorists for not moving over as required.
