MISSOURI MOVE OVER LAW TOUGHENED
Missouri Senate Bill 872, awaiting the governor's signature, strengthens Missouri's move over law from a Class B to a Class A misdemeanor, with violators facing the potential of up to a year in jail or a $1,000 fine. Missouri has seen four state troopers struck and killed since 2002:
Trooper Kelly L. Poynter - Jan. 18, 2002, while investigating an earlier accident;
Trooper Michael L. Newton -- May 23, 2003, vehicle struck during course of a traffic stop;
Corporal John A. "Jay" Sampietro -- Aug. 17, 2005 -- while directing traffic around a team investigating an earlier accident; and
Trooper Donald K. "Kevin" Floyd -- Sept. 22, 2005 -- struck during the course of a traffic stop.
The bill also includes measures to improve safety around highway work zones.
