Massachusetts: Tow-truck driver hurt in hit and run

PEABODY — The operator of a Gaeta's tow truck was struck and injured Friday night by another vehicle as he was assisting an disabled vehicle in the breakdown lane of Route 128 northbound at Route 114.

Shortly before 9:15 p.m., Friday, the tow truck operator was changing a flat tire on the passenger side of a disabled motor vehicle in the breakdown lane of Route 128 when he was hit by a passing 2016 Nissan Altima with Maine registration.

According to police reports, the vehicle swerved into the grass to the right of the disabled car, struck the tow truck driver, and fled.

All area State and local patrols were notified. The 21-year-old male victim was taken to Lahey Clinic by Atlantic Ambulance for non-life threatening injuries. His name is not being released.

Less than an hour-and-a-half later, the owner/operator of the vehicle that fled turned himself in to the Massachusetts State Police-Danvers barracks. The operator was interviewed and the vehicle was photographed by Crime Scene Services.

The operator will be summonsed to court for leaving the scene of a personal-injury crash, marked lanes violations and possibly other charges upon completion of the ongoing investigation.

The state police does not release the names of summonsed defendants until they appear in court.
