Indiana: Police officer, tow truck driver injured in two crashes on U.S. 20 Bypass
A tow truck driver suffered leg injuries and a St. Joseph County police officer suffered minor injuries amid two crashes about 9:30 pm. Sunday on the U.S. 20 Bypass near the Elm Road ramp.
St. Joseph County Cpl. Briana Glueckert, 28, was on the highway assisting a vehicle that had struck the center concrete median, according to the sheriff’s department. Her patrol car, with flashing lights, was blocking the passing lane when it was struck by a vehicle driven by a 59-year-old Elkhart man.
That driver was arrested by Indiana State Police and booked into the St. Joseph County Jail on a preliminary charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
Glueckert was taken to the hospital with shoulder pain, according to police.
Another crash occurred as a tow-truck driver arrived at the crash scene to assist officers. Tow-truck operator Jeff Porter, 37, an employee of City-Wide Towing, was struck by another eastbound passenger car, police said.
Porter was outside his vehicle when he was struck. He experienced leg injuries and was transported to a local hospital, police said.
The snowy weather conditions and speed were factors in each of the crashes, according to police.
