Virginia: Families of local firefighters raise concerns after driver slams into Chesterfield fire truck
A 40-year old man was charged with reckless driving after rear-ending a Chesterfield, fire truck on Sunday. The crash, which did not hurt any firefighters, did hit home for families of local first responders. 8News spoke with the families of two Chesterfield firefighters about how Sunday's crash revealed the nerve-wracking, heartbreaking reality they experience every day.
"Please do not be the person responsible for my husband not coming home to my son," Rachel Marsiglio, whose husband is Chesterfield Battalion Chief Billy Marsiglio, told 8News.
"Our husbands are more scared of going to a car crash than going to a fire because of what can happen," Marsiglio explained.
"It is beyond heartbreaking," Marsiglio said, "that people think that their text message or getting to a place quicker is more important than any firefighters or first responder's life."
Bayden Monahan's mother is a Chesterfield firefighter and he told 8News that the danger his mother experiences on the road concerns him deeply.
"She's out helping people that she doesn't know and she could get hurt at any time and it just scares me," Monahan said.
Marsiglio told 8News that drivers need to make an effort to pay more attention while driving around fire trucks and first responders.
"This is not acceptable for us to be fearful that our husbands are not going to come home to us. Take the couple of minutes to slow down or move over," she said.
