Rhode Island: State police cruiser struck at crash scene
A state police cruiser parked on Route 6 east was rear-ended late Tuesday night while responding to a separate crash in the city, police said.
No injuries were reported in the crash involving the state police vehicle. The driver told police he was disoriented by the flashing lights of police vehicles. Providence resident Chheng Long, 52, was cited for obedience to a police officer, following too close and conditions requiring reduced speeds.
The trooper was in his parked cruiser with the emergency lights on when Long’s vehicle hit the cruiser, police say.
Troopers had responded to both sides of Route 6 after a driver heading west near Tobey Street said she swerved to avoid another car and hit a utility pole. The driver and a passenger were taken to Rhode Island Hospital for minor injuries in that crash, state police said.
After that earlier crash, seven vehicles hit the downed utility pole or debris, which was blocking both sides of the highway, state police said. No injuries were reported in those accidents.
