Pennsylvania-Firefighter hit while working crash scene in Wyoming County
A volunteer firefighter directing traffic at a crash scene Friday morning was hit by a dump truck and airlifted to a hospital for emergency treatment, according to state police.Troopers identified the firefighter only as a 62-year-old Monroe Twp. man; however firefighters said he is Edward Nulton of the Kunkle Volunteer Fire Company. The company posted a message to Facebook on Friday morning acknowledging the accident. “Asking prayers for our fellow firefighter who was badly injured in at an accident scene today,” the department wrote.
According to state troopers, Kunkle firefighters responded to the intersection of state Routes 29 and 309 for a crash around 5:45 a.m. Friday. Police said Valarie L. Hamer, 47, of Verona, was traveling north on Route 29 when she lost control of her Chrysler Town & Country and went through the intersection without stopping at a stop sign. The vehicle crossed the intersection and crashed into a mailbox, a street sign and a utility pole, police said.
Hamer, who was cited for driving at an unsafe speed, was taken to Wilkes-Barre General Hospital to be treated for suspected minor injuries, police said.
As police worked the scene of that crash, Nulton was directing traffic when he was struck around 6:35 a.m., according to police.
The truck driver, 46-year-old Jack C. Husband, of Harveys Lake, had been travelling north on Route 309 when he hit Nulton, causing serious injuries, police said.
Nulton was medevacked to a Geisinger hospital, but his condition later Friday was not known.
It was not immediately clear what caused the crash or whether Husband would be charged.
State police were continuing to investigate.
