Ohio: Deputy directing traffic is struck by pickup after Tuslaw High School football game
A Stark County Sheriff’s deputy directing traffic at a local high school football game was struck by a pickup truck late Friday night. Deputy Jeffery McCollister, 46, was on-duty as he directed traffic just before 10 p.m. on State Route 93 in front of Tuslaw High School when he was struck, according to a news release from Lt. Leo Shirkey of the Ohio Highway Patrol’s Canton post.
McCollister was wearing a reflective safety jacket and holding a flashlight when a 51-year-old North Lawrence woman pulled her black 2016 Dodge Ram 1500 from a private drive at the school, the release showed. She was turning left to go north onto Route 93 and, as she was directed out onto the road, she struck McCollister.
“He’s banged up a bit,” Sheriff George T. Maier said Saturday morning. The highway patrol was called to investigate the crash because it involved a deputy, which is common procedure for the sheriff’s office, he confirmed.
McCollister was treated at Aultman Hospital for “non-incapacitating injuries,” including a broken wrist, the highway patrol’s news release stated.
The woman was not injured in the incident, which remained under investigation on Saturday. No charges had been filed.
The sheriff said McCollister had been directing traffic as an extra-duty detail at the school.
“It’s a dangerous job,” the sheriff said. Capt. Daniel Stiles of the Uniontown Police Department was directing traffic for Lake Center Christian School in February 2011 when he was fatally struck by a driver at State Route 619 and Kaufman Avenue NW
