Wisconsin: 2 deputies at traffic stop run to avoid being struck by suspected impaired driver
Deputies ran to avoid being struck by a reportedly impaired driver on a Juneau County shoulder early Saturday, according to a news release. The Juneau County Sheriff's Office said two deputies were assisting a Wisconsin State Patrol trooper during a traffic stop at 12:41 a.m. on Highway 12 and 16 near County Road J between Lyndon Station and Mauston
The trooper and deputies were standing near their squad vehicles when the saw a vehicle headed toward them, driving on the shoulder at the estimated 55 mph speed limit, according to the report. The officers ran into the north ditch to avoid being struck, the sheriff's office said. The vehicle struck a county squad and pushed it into another squad, narrowly missing the officers.
The driver, 47-year-old Kurt Salverson, of Mauston, was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, open intoxicants, unsafe lane deviation and failure to change lanes when approaching an emergency vehicle. Wisconsin State Patrol and the sheriff's office are investigating. Sheriff Brent Oleson said Salverson was wearing his seat belt and wasn't injured in the crash.
