Louisiana: Fenton police officer still in ICU after being hit during traffic stop
A Fenton police officer is still in ICU after having surgery to repair his leg that was injured after being hit by a car during a Sunday traffic stop.
Around 5:44 p.m., Fenton Police Officer Shannon Brown was writing a citation on U.S. 165 near Fourth Avenue, when a driver struck his unit from the rear, forcing it to run into him and break his tibia, according to Sgt. Vernon O'Quinn.
Brown, 40, was taken to CHRISTUS-St. Patrick Hospital, where he underwent surgery at 4 a.m. this morning. He will likely need more surgery and he is still in ICU, O'Quinn said.
Since Brown was struck by his own unit, the investigation has been handed over to Louisiana State Police. Sgt. James Anderson with Troop D confirmed that the driver was charged with failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.
The driver, along with the person Brown had pulled over, suffered minor injuries.
According to Anderson, the 77-year-old Texas driver who hit him was not intoxicated or impaired. State police officials believe she might not have been paying attention or she might have blacked out before the crash.
Brown has been with Fenton police for three years.
