Kentucky: Waco firefighter struck by truck
A Waco volunteer firefighter was struck by a pick-up truck Thursday evening after its driver didn't see the firefighter as he was working a traffic control point following an oil spill. According to posts on its Facebook page, the Waco Volunteer Fire Department received 500 phone calls pertaining to the accident that happened at the intersection of College Hill and Irvine roads.
A lawnmower being used to mow the grass on the side of the road spilled hydraulic oil on the roadway, causing a possible emergency, according to officials. Waco Volunteer firefighters were called out to the scene to help with clean up. Vardy Jones, also known as Britches, was working traffic control point when he was struck by a pick-up. Jones was taken by ambulance to UK Hospital in Lexington, where he received treatment for a few broken ribs and a possible sprained knee, according to a second Facebook post. Jones was released late Thursday.
Assistant Chief Jason Rawlins said Jones was in good spirits when he spoke with him and said he couldn't wait to get back to work.
