Iowa: Bodycam video shows police chief struck by car
Boone police say three people were arrested this week after they struck the police chief with a car while trying to evade authorities. The incident happened around 3 p.m. Monday when Boone officers were responding to an assault call in the 600 block of Fifth Street.
When officers arrived, they spotted a possible suspect vehicle, a silver Dodge Avenger, leaving eastbound from the area. Police said the driver went eastbound to Fifth and Story streets, where the driver stopped because were police cars in front of and behind the vehicle.
When Police Chief John Wiebold got out of his police car, the driver of the suspect vehicle then accelerated, striking Wiebold, and continued northbound on Story Street, according to police.
Police said officers then pursued the suspect northbound on Story Street, and then eastbound on 12th Street at speeds reaching 55 mph. Police said in the 900 block of 12th Street, the suspect vehicle stopped and the driver attempted to leave the area on foot but was quickly apprehended.
Police said three people who were in the car face charges.
The driver, Erica Shales, 25, of Des Moines, is charged with eluding, assault on a peace officer with a deadly weapon, possession of a controlled substance, driving while suspended and a Polk County warrant.
Craig Collins, 35, of Nevada, is charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Chanel Clark, 32, of Ames, faces two charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Wiebold suffered minor injuries and no medical treatment was necessary, police said.
The case is under investigation.
