Georgia: Off-Duty Firefighter Struck and Killed Trying to Assist Motorist
An Alpharetta volunteer firefighter was killed early Monday shortly after he pulled his vehicle over to help the driver of a disabled car in Cobb County.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that 52-year-old Mark Strow was driving on I-75 at about 4:30 a.m. when he pulled behind the stalled vehicle to offer aid.
Police say Strow activated a set of white strobe lights on his SUV and put on a reflective traffic vest. Moments later, the driver of another car hit the rear of his vehicle, which then struck and killed the firefighter. The driver of the car that rear-ended Strow's vehicle was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital with minor injuries. The driver he was trying to help was uninjured.
"We are going to miss you Mark. Your dedication to others was an inspiration to us all," the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety said in a tweet Tuesday. According to Strow's LinkedIn page, he was the IT Chairman for the Historical Society of the Georgia National Guard. He also worked as a specialist in disaster relief for the Georgia State Defense Force and had been with the Alpharetta DPS Volunteer Fire Corp since April 2013.
