Texas: Car strikes police, fire vehicles last week

Authorities received a call about a one-vehicle wreck on the State Highway 35 Causeway bridge at 12:14 Friday morning, Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office dispatcher Delores Drake said. A 2009 Ford sedan, driven by Rene Sylvester Reyes, 44, of Edna, had been traveling northbound when it ended up on the railing of the causeway, Drake said. She did not know from the dispatch report how the vehicle ended up on the railing. Calls to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the agency investigating the crash, went unreturned as of press time.

While law enforcement and first responders worked on the initial wreck, a second incident occurred. A 2015 GMC sedan, driven by Stephanie Jean Stricklin, 32, of Port Lavaca, was headed north on Hwy. 35, Drake said.

Stricklin did not stop for Port Lavaca Police Department officers, who had the entrance of the Causeway blocked off because of the initial wreck, Drake said.

The GMC struck a PLPD unit, a Chevrolet Caprice, causing damage to its bumper, PLPD Lt. Josh Smith said.

The GMC continued onto the Causeway and came to rest when it struck a Port Lavaca Fire Department vehicle, Drake said. The truck was a 2006 Spartan/Rosenbauer fire engine, PLFD Chief Joe Reyes said. According to the fire chief, the driver’s side tire and wheel well were damaged on the engine.

Both Joe Reyes and Smith said their respective vehicles were positioned according to the respective departments’ protocols.
