Missouri: MoDOT workers struck by vehicle overnight
Three workers from the Missouri Department of Transportation were injured in a crash overnight in North Kansas City. A car left Interstate 35 at the 16th Avenue exit and struck the plow while workers tried to fix chains on a blade, officials said.
"A little after one in the morning, on an off-ramp on a wide shoulder, where there's no businesses open, you know, it should have been a safe place to do that work," said MoDOT assistant district engineer Chris Redline. "It wasn't." The Mazda barely missed hitting the truck but hit the plow the crew was working on. The Mazda overturned and the driver got out and ran.
Two of the workers were taken to a hospital. One has already been released.
Police said all of the workers should survive.
The Missouri Department of Transportation said the case serves as another reminder for drivers to be extra careful in areas where road crews are trying to do their job.
"They just want to go home at the end of the day," said Redline. "If you see our vehicles, slow down. Scoot over, if you can. Give them room to work."
Police said the 29-year-old driver who hit the workers left the scene of the crash and may have been driving under the influence of alcohol.
