California: One man taken to hospital after being hit in construction zone
On Monday, a man was struck by a car while performing traffic control duties in a construction zone. He was rushed to the local hospital with moderate injuries. Jesse Broadway, 25 of Shingletown, was driving a 1994 Honda westbound on Highway 299 when he approached a traffic control construction area.
Jeff Wierzbicki, 54 of Red Bluff, was on foot and assigned as a traffic controller for the construction zone - he was in charge of holding a stop/slow sign. Wierzbicki had just told westbound traffic to drive through the construction zone, turning his sign from stop to slow, and Broadway, traveling at a minimum of 25 mph, hit Wierzbicki with the front of his vehicle.
This collision caused for Wierzbicki to be thrown onto the hood of the car and subsequently into the windshield. Broadway continued westbound, carrying Wierzbicki a short way until Broadway slowed his car. This action caused Wierzbicki to be tossed to the ground. Broadway stopped at the scene of the collision.
Wierzbicki was taken by CHP helicopter to Mercy Medical Center for moderate injuries. The incident caused Highway 299 to be closed east of Ingot near mile marker 47 for about 20 minutes.
