Ohio: Sheriff's deputy, 76, struck by stolen SUV

A 23-year-old man is accused of hitting a deputy with a stolen sports utility vehicle Friday, authorities said. Burnett North was arrested and charged with assault, eluding an officer and receiving stolen property, Hamilton County Sheriff Jim Neil said.

North allegedly put a 2015 Honda Pilot in reverse and intentionally struck and pinned Deputy Albert Caldwell, 76, against his squad car, authorities said. Caldwell and his partner pulled over North, who had run a stop sign near Section Road and Kenton Avenue just after 1 p.m. Lt. Tom Butler said.

"On approach of the vehicle, the driver of the vehicle placed the vehicle in reverse, striking one of the deputies, knocking him up onto the hood of the patrol car, then striking thepatrol vehicle," Butler said. Caldwell was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital for a minor leg injury and was released Friday.

Butler said the driver and a passenger ditched the vehicle about a mile away in Amberly Village. Two K-9 units, a helicopter and a team of deputies and police officers searched the area Friday afternoon.Quentin White saw the initial chaos, and he saw the injured deputy on the ground.

"When the car pulled off, you know, I seen the officer kind of get woozy and fall down to the ground," White said. "First what I was thinking was his legs weren’t crushed, you know, because he kind of stood on his own for a second. Then he went down, they rolled him over a few times. Then eventually he was sitting up. Then they kind of lifted him up and helped him to the stretcher."

White said when the driver of the stolen SUV took off, he put other drivers in danger. "He took off, you know, weaving down the street, dodging cars," White said.
