Illinois: Police officer hit by truck
An Evanston police officer was struck by a truck near the intersection of Emerson Street and Dodge Avenue about 9:40 this morning.
The officer has been taken to Evanston Hospital and traffic at the intersection is blocked off while police investigate the incident. Evanston City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz says traffic signals were out at the intersection and the officer was opening stop signs to provide traffic control there, when -- as she crossed the street on foot -- a construction truck whose driver apparently didn't see her struck her. The officer ended up pinned under the front axle of the truck, but Bobkiewicz says she apparently didn't suffer any major injuries, although she's being held at Evanston Hospital for further tests.
Bobkiewicz says the intersection of Emerson and Dodge is likely to remain closed to traffic for another couple of hours while police conduct a full investigation of the accident. Police Cmdr. Joseph Dugan says the officer, who's been on the Evanston police force for 19 years, was crossing northbound from the southwest corner of the intersection when she was struck by the eastbound dump truck. He says she's listed in stable condition at the hospital.
