Canada: Crossing guard hit by lumber truck

A crossing guard on her way to her morning shift was struck by a lumber truck on Elizabeth Street around 8 a.m. on Thursday across from Burnham Public School.  The woman had just parked her vehicle on north side of Elizabeth Street and was crossing the road when a fully loaded lumber truck was backing up and struck the woman. The driver may not have noticed he'd struck and possibly ran over the woman initially.

Postmedia has learned the woman struck on Elizabeth Street on Thursday morning was honoured by the Governor General of Canada for helping save the life of a woman trapped on her balcony as fire raged.  Nicole Leblanc received the commendation letter signed by the Governor General of Canada, David Johnston.

Leblanc and two other individuals sprang into action when a fire erupted at the home of Lois and Dennis Harvey.  Lois was trapped on her upper balcony and said she wouldn’t have made it off the balcony if not for the heroic actions of Leblanc and the other two individuals. Leblanc was struck by a lumber truck on Thursday morning as she was getting ready to start her crossing guard duties on Burnham Street by Burnham Public School.

She was airlifted to a Toronto hospital with what police describe as major injuries.  One person told Northumberland Today the crossing guard on Burnham Street was new to the crossing this year, but was always smiling and extremely nice to the children. The driver of the lumber truck was later taken away by ambulance, reportedly suffering from shock.

A member of the Cobourg Fire Department took over crossing guard duties for children on Burnham Street. Throughout the morning worried parents asked emergency responders if it was a child that was struck.  Ministry of Labour and the Ontario Provincial Police Technical Traffic Collision Investigators were on scene for several hours examining the area.

When Northumberland Today was on scene around noon, investigators put the lumber truck into reverse and the audio alarm for reversing was clearly heard.
