Ohio: Trooper released after being struck at traffic stop in Howland
An Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper was released from the hospital after his cruiser was hit during a traffic stop Sunday morning. It happened around 2:30 a.m. on East Market Street at Route 82 in Howland Township.
Reports say Sergeant Daniel Jesse of the Warren Post had just pulled over a Ford Escape for a traffic stop. While approaching the driver's side of the vehicle, a Chevy Impala struck the rear of Sergeant Jesse’s patrol car, pushing the patrol car into the Ford Escape. The Ford Escape then hit Sergeant Jesse.
The Chevy Impala traveled off the right side of the road into a ditch. The driver of the Impala, Jimmie Ray Stella, Jr., was found to be under the influence of alcohol and was charged with OVI and failure to move over for a public safety vehicle.
The trooper and Stella were taken to nearby hospitals with minor injuries and were released. The driver of the Ford Escape was treated at the scene. Stella was taken to the Trumbull County Jail.
Ohio State Highway Patrol reminds motorists to move over, when possible, or slow down when approaching any vehicles that are stopped along the side of the road with flashing lights.
