New York: Brighton man charged with trying to run over police goes to trial

The man accused of beating his pregnant girlfriend and trying to hit police with his vehicle opted Wednesday to go to trial. Tyler Keys, 22, declined a plea deal in court Wednesday.

On March 22, Brighton Police officers were called to Briar Manor by a family member over reports that Keys was beating the stomach of his girlfriend while she was six months pregnant. Officers stopped their patrol vehicles and got out in an attempt to stop Keys' vehicle. One officers said he feared for his personal safety and fired two rounds from his service weapon to stop the vehicle.

Keys was not struck by the rounds; neither hit Keys or his vehicle. He then crashed into a parked vehicle and was taken into custody. His mother, Sundra Keys, later told 13WHAM News in an interview that her son "didn't intend to harm anyone."

In April, a Monroe County grand jury indicted Keys on nine counts, ranging from aggravated attempted assault on a police officer to endangering the welfare of a child.
