Connecticut: East Hampton Police Officer Hit By Car On Route 66 In Stable Condition

The East Hampton police officer struck by a car on Route 66 while assisting an Eversource crew responding to a power outage late Sunday night was listed in stable condition on Monday as police investigate how the accident occurred.

Officer Hardie Burgin was flown by Lifestar to Hartford Hospital after he was hit by a car driven by Michael B. Fraulino of Portland near the intersection of Route 66 and Maple Street. The accident is still under investigation by the State Police Accident Reconstruction team. Fraulino's Toyota Rav4 was impounded by police and towed to Troop K in Colchester.

Fraulino appears to have struck Burgin with the front driver's side of his vehicle, according to a state police report. Burgin, 29, was assisting Eversource crew who were responding to a report of a downed wire that had caused a power outage that affected 10 customers, according to company spokesman Mitch Gross.

"It was a routine, small customer outage call," Gross said. The Eversource crew wasn't involved in the accident.

Burgin is a five-year member of the East Hampton police force, which only has 13 full-time officers. On Sunday night officials said the officer was alert and conscious at Hartford Hospital and on Monday morning said he is now listed in stable condition.

The accident occurred about 8:44 p.m. near the intersection of Route 66 and Maple Street. East Hampton Town Manager Michael Maniscalco said the officer was on duty and was hit by another vehicle while he was out of his car.

"Right now we are concentrating on the health of our officer and helping his family," Maniscalco said.

State police were called to the scene to assist with traffic on Route 66. Grant said the department accident reconstruction team was headed to the scene and that troopers were assisting the local department in patrolling the town.
