Georgia: Augusta man hits fire engine, dies instantly
An Augusta man was killed after striking a fire truck Tuesday on Mike Padgett Highway.
The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and Augusta Fire Department were working a wreck with injuries around 2 p.m., when Ted R. Collins, Jr., 38, failed to slow down for the wreck and struck the fire engine parked in the center turn lane on Mike Padgett Highway near Horseshoe Road. Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen said Collins, of Clark Road, hit the rear of the fire truck and died instantly. He was pronounced dead at 2:10 p.m.
Collins was driving a Ford Escape and had to be extricated from the vehicle. Emergency equipment on the fire truck was flashing, Bowen confirmed.
