A police officer is hurt and two drivers are dead after a series of events that led to two accidents along Highway 6 Sunday morning in College Station. According to College Station police, an officer was attempting to stop a truck around 1:34 a.m. traveling in the wrong way of traffic on the feeder road in the 1300 block of State Highway 6.
Police say the truck entered onto Highway 6 using the northbound exit ramp, still heading south against traffic. Within seconds of the officer turning around and activating his emergency lights, the GMC truck ran head-on into an 18 wheeler traveling north in the outside lane of Highway 6.
Police say the 27-year-old male driver of the GMC truck was ejected from the vehicle and died from injuries sustained in the accident. He has been identified as Frank James Douglass IV from Navasota. The tractor trailer, occupied by a 44-year-old female driver and a 53-year-old male passenger, came to a rest in the center median.
The occupants of the 18 wheeler were transported to The College Station Medical Center where they were treated and released for non-life threatening injuries.
As emergency personnel responded to the scene of the accident a College Station Police Officer stopped in the inside lane of northbound Highway 6 at Southwest Parkway to alert oncoming traffic of the accident ahead. The officer’s emergency lights were on when a 1989 Buick Park Avenue, driven by a 33-year-old man, rear-ended the stationary patrol car. The Park Avenue rolled and came to rest upside down in the ditch off the roadway after striking the patrol car.
The driver of the vehicle died on scene from his injuries. He's been identified as 33-year-old Marcus Dwayne Ewing of Navasota. The College Station Officer involved in the accident was transported to a local emergency room where hewas treated and released for non-life threatening injuries. He is expected to recover.
