Ohio: Fleeing driver nearly hits Dayton officer

A police officer who jumped out of the way of a fleeing driver Saturday night narrowly missed being hit by the car. Two officers inside a cruiser on patrol at 8:30 p.m. spotted a Chevrolet Impala fail to signal a turn 100 feet ahead before turning from Blueberry Avenue onto England Avenue. The officers activated the overhead lights to initiate a traffic stop when the driver turned onto Kings Highway at a dead-end, according to a Dayton police report. The officers got out of the cruiser after the driver raised his hands in the air. Then the driver began to accelerate at a high rate of speed towards one of the officers as both officers ordered him to stop. According to the officer’s report, “the driver continued on his path towards me, requiring me to take immediate evasive action to avoid being struck by his vehicle.” The officer reported that even after he got out of the way, “the vehicle was still within a foot of striking me.” The car was described as black Chevrolet Impala with a temporary Ohio license tag.
