Mississippi: Yazoo City police officer injured when struck by suspect's vehicle

A Yazoo City police officer was taken to the hospital Thursday evening after being struck by a suspect's vehicle. The incident started at 14th and Calhoun streets when police tried to stop Cruzette Loften for a traffic violation on a dead-end street.

"From what I understand, it wasn't a high-speed pursuit. He just refused to stop," Chief Jeff Curtis said.

Curtis said a police detective walked up to Loften's car.

"At that time, I was advised (that) the vehicle sped up and and struck our detective. (The officer) went up over the top of the car."

Investigators said the detective fired at least one shot at Loften, but the suspect kept going.
