Minnesota: Police officer injured after being hit by SUV while on the scene of a crash

A Plymouth police sergeant injured her ankle when she was hit by an oncoming SUV while investigating a hit-and-run crash Tuesday night. The State Patrol’s report says 43-year-old Angela Haseman was “out on a crash scene” on Kilmer Lane in Plymouth around 10:45 p.m. when she was struck by a Hyundai Santa Fe that was traveling southbound on the road.

Lt. Tiffani Nielson with the State Patrol told BringMeTheNews Sgt. Haseman and other members of the Plymouth Police Department had responded to a hit-and-run crash involving a downed power line.

Haseman was out of her squad car, checking to see if the power lines were live when she was hit by the SUV. The impact sort of spun her around, Nielson says, and she ended up injuring her ankle.

She was taken to North Memorial Medical Center by ambulance and her injuries are described as “non-life threatening.”

A 22-year-old from Bloomington was driving the Hyundai that hit Haseman, the report says. He told the trooper at the scene he couldn’t see her because of the emergency lights on the squad cars and was not cited, Nielson says.

The man suffered no apparent injury in the crash and damage to his vehicle was minor, the State Patrol’s report says.

Nielson notes Haseman was lucky she wasn’t more seriously hurt – if it was a more direct hit the crash could have been fatal.

Lt. Nielson is also reminding motorists to stay attentive, especially when there are emergency lights flashing because it signals that something is going on in that area.

Haseman is a 16-year veteran of the Plymouth Police Department, according to her LinkedIn page. The Star Tribune calls her one of the “more visible officers” on the force – she hosts a cable TV show called “Along for the Ride”.

She’s also entered and won a few pageants, according to Plymouth Magazine. Haseman was Mrs. South Dakota United States in 2011 and Mrs. Minnesota International in 2006.
