Michigan: Westbound I-196 closed due to multiple crashes in Grand Rapids
Police have closed westbound I-196 at College Avenue Monday night while crews respond to crashes in the area. The freeway was closed about 9 p.m. after seven cars crashed on the icy freeway in three separate incidents, police said.
*A pickup truck hit a fire engine that was responding to another collision, causing "significant damage." Other cars hit a utility vehicle that was blocking the crash. *State Police Trooper Andrew Rothermal said motorists coming over the hill approaching College Avenue encountered spots where the road had iced over, causing their cars to slide. Several vehicles spun out when trying to slow down for the emergency vehicles. Some cars hit the wall.
At least one person was pinned in a vehicle and extricated by firefighters.
Two people were transported to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in stable condition. Other injuries were minor. No one was seriously injured.
